Flying Saucer mushroom Overview

Flying Saucer mushroom, blue angel mushroom, or azure psilocybin mushroom, is one of the most potent naturally occurring psilocybin-containing species. It belongs to the family Hymenogastraceae within the order Agaricales and is widely recognized for its high alkaloid content and strong psychoactive effects.

This species is considered significantly more powerful than many other psilocybin mushrooms due to its elevated concentrations of psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin. Because of this, it has earned a reputation as a strain best suited for experienced users seeking a deep and immersive psychedelic journey.

Flying Saucer is also notable for its distinctive morphology and its natural habitat along coastal regions of the western United States.

Appearance

Flying Saucer mushrooms have medium to large caps ranging from 3–10 cm in diameter. The cap begins conic to convex and expands to broadly convex or nearly flat with age, often retaining a pronounced central umbo.

The surface is smooth and becomes viscous when moist due to a separable gelatinous pellicle. Cap coloration ranges from chestnut to caramel brown and is hygrophanous, fading to a lighter straw tone as it dries. When bruised or damaged, it stains a deep blue, commonly associated with the presence of psilocybin.

The gills are closely spaced, brown in color, and darken when injured. The spore print is dark purplish-brown to purplish-black.

The stipe (stem) grows 9–20 cm long and 3–6 mm thick. It is silky white when young, becoming dingy brown with age, and hollow at maturity. The base thickens downward and is often surrounded by dense, root-like white mycelium that binds woody debris together.

The taste is extremely bitter, while the odor ranges from neutral to faintly starchy.
